Dear Friends!
Almost 20 years ago, when we first began creating our silhouettes, we did it merely as a hobby. They were for our children and grandchildren. They were representations of the wonderful times the family had shared. It was truly a hobby of love. Over the years it has become much more than a hobby. Today it is a labor of love, and we continue to enjoy creating our “slices of life cut from wood”. Most of all, we feel privileged to be personal reminders of fond memories for thousands of households and families around the country.

What is a Silhouette?

The King’s creation was a result of their long appreciation of the old German art-form of Scherenschnitte where an extremely intricate still-life or folk scene was cut from paper and placed on a second sheet of contrasting color creating a silhouette.

In this case, a design is created and then transferred to a small piece of Baltic Birch. This particular wood was chosen for its strength, flexibility, and lightness of weight-but not too brittle.

Working through a large jeweler’s magnifying glass, John carefully drills then slowly cuts each line. The cuts, like a pleasant memory, should not be rushed. Several hours later, when all cuts are completed and the scene has been revealed, the piece is gently sanded and cleaned.

The wood tableau is next mounted into its base and sealed with flat black paint. Each piece is then ceremoniously named and numbered, and becomes a memory ready to be shared.

As we have traveled from the east coast to the west coast and north and south we are continually reminded that we, all of us in this wonderful country, share very similar memories. There are cultural and regional variations, but life’s theme of our nation’s symphony remains constant. That is why our general subjects remain the same, but variations may change each year or from region to region. Some of our customers have even purchased the same piece five years in a row because they are all different.
